Prosecution for NDIS fraud

The Victorian County Court has today sentenced Mohamed Osman Omar (36), to four years imprisonment, after he pleaded guilty to defrauding the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) of more than $370,000, and attempting to obtain a further amount of more than $85,000. He will be eligible for parole in two and a half years.

Between June and August 2018, Mr Omar, a registered provider of services to NDIS participants, accessed the accounts of 230 NDIS participants. He made 392 requests for payment from the NDIS for services that he did not provide.

Mr Omar used the fraudulently obtained funds to purchase luxury items including two motor vehicles.

“Fraudulent claiming impacts on the funds available to NDIS recipients” said the CDPP’s head of Revenue and Benefits Fraud, Deputy Director James Carter.

“We will continue to work with our Taskforce partner agencies to ensure that those who might abuse the system are deterred from doing so.”
